Westerly Sun Column | Come Check Out the Library of Things
November 12, 2024
Have you ever needed a tool or gadget for just one project, but didn’t want to buy it for a single use? Our library has a solution! We’re happy to offer a “Library of Things,” a growing collection where you can borrow useful items — no purchase necessary. Originally featuring birdwatching kits, lawn games, and basic tools, our collection has recently expanded to include even more practical items, such as a hand truck, knife sharpener, and projector — all available for free with your library card.
This expansion doesn’t stop with adults! We’re thrilled to announce that our Children’s Room and Teen Space have also created their own “Library of Things” collections, which will soon be available to the public. These additions will include a variety of fun, educational, and interactive items designed to spark creativity and exploration among kids and teens. Soon, young library users can check out items tailored to their interests, making the library a true resource for the whole family.
By borrowing from the Library of Things, you can save money, reduce clutter, and avoid the expense of buying items you might only need once or twice. It’s perfect for when you need to complete a project or simply want to try out something new. The hand truck, for example, can make moving heavy items easier; the knife sharpener can give your kitchen tools a fresh edge; and the projector can turn a movie night at home into a special event. With these additions, we aim to make your library a resource for both everyday and occasional needs.
Our expanded collection not only helps you save, but it also reduces waste by encouraging the shared use of items. Borrowing instead of buying helps cut down on unnecessary purchases and keeps items from sitting unused at home — or worse, ending up in the landfill. Every time you check something out, you’re helping create a more sustainable community.
So, next time you’re at the library, come see what’s new in the Library of Things, from tools and gadgets to our exciting additions for children and teens! We’re here to make a wide variety of resources accessible to everyone, and we’re always open to your suggestions for expanding our offerings. Borrowing is simple, economical, and sustainable — why buy when you can borrow? Discover what’s waiting for you at your local library!
